St. Martha's A.M.E. Church
101 S. Canada. It is believed that African Americans settled in Doniphan County around 1860. This simple frame church, built around 1882, was named for Martha Hubbard, a former slave who escaped to Kansas from Missouri via the Underground Railroad. She made a living as a cook and worked with great devotion to help establish the “little church” in Highland. (NRHP)
