Samuel Hunt Grave

From Dacotah, 4¾ miles west on Santa Fe (becomes K-31) (north side of the highway maintenance pullout). Surrounded by a pipe fence, a weathered head-stone marks the earliest known grave of a soldier on the Santa Fe Trail. Samuel Hunt, a private in the U.S. Dragoons, was on Colonel Henry Dodge’s Rocky Mountain expedition in 1835 when he died of “inflammation of the bowels” during the regiment’s return to Fort Leavenworth.
